The concept of Te Whare Tapa Whā is about maintaining not just physical and mental health but also social and spiritual connections in order to promote good health.  Just as each corner of the house must be strong and balanced to hold its structure, each dimension of well-being must be balanced for health to exist.

Taha tinana (physical wellbeing)

This dimension is about how our body grows and develops, feels and moves, and how we care for it. Being physically well helps us to feel mentally well and improves our overall wellbeing.  Nourishing and strengthening your physical wellbeing helps you to cope with the ups and downs of life. Tinana suffers when a person is under emotional stress, or is unwell. Pain in different parts of your body is tinana communicating what is going on consciously or unconsciously. Sometimes our tinana might face a setback (like an injury) or is not where we’d like it to be. What’s important is that we do what we can to look after it
