Nicole’s Home Birth Journey

The birth of my second child, natural, at home and unmedicated. Just how I hoped.

My labour progress slowly, intensity increasing and settling again. When night time hit and I said goodnight to my first born, my body and mind knew I could give my attention to the life I was about to birth. I had my wonderful husband, and best friend around me, providing comfort and support, in the stillness of the dark I knew I needed time alone, to connect, to trust and be still. By 11pm I felt baby boy moving a lot, I knew after labouring all day he needed me to dance with the contractions, rock to the rhythm of birth and help him to move further down into the birth canal, so I got back up after having some rest and swayed, I knew things were progressing and the midwife needed to come, I woke my husband, and we called my midwife. I continued to labour, sway over the Swiss ball, receive back massages, take my homeopathy birth mix, squeeze my birth comb and surrender.

I remember my birth playlist in the background. Sometimes my mind would think I must be getting closer, and wow I’m doing well but this is hard. My midwife offered the birth pool and said I was ready, I thought I don’t think I am there yet although not long before that I had to vomit, which I do just before transition.

I hopped in and the warmth of the water was soothing, I was able to rest and just breathe through the contractions, I felt at peace, I swayed and my body started to involuntarily push, it was a lot, it was intense but I went with it. I put my hands down and could feel his head, he was coming, he was almost here and before I knew it, out he came. I pulled him up and brought him to my chest. Wow I had done it, I had birthed my baby at home. Many question you and think it’s reckless but when you trust and allow the physiology of birth to be present, you can birth your baby.
